Counter-Strike 2 Update Overhauls Crosshair System, Adds Grenade Aiming in Freeze Time

Valve shipped a focused update Wednesday that rewrites how crosshairs work, adds a new Static Quadrant style, lets players preview grenade trajectories during freeze time, and fixes clipping on Rush maps. The share code format has changed, so existing codes will need regeneration.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The September 30 update introduces a new Static Quadrant crosshair style, outline color options, negative gaps for classic dynamic, finer alpha increments (0.01), and grenade crosshairs during freeze time for instant smoke lineups. Crosshair share codes now include scope dot settings and use a new format. Rush maps receive clipping fixes.

  • New Static Quadrant crosshair style added alongside outline color customization
  • Grenade crosshairs now visible in freeze time — hold any grenade attack button to preview trajectory for instant smokes
  • Classic dynamic crosshair supports negative gaps and 0.01 alpha increments for finer tuning
  • Crosshair share code format changed; scope dot scale and color now included, old codes incompatible
  • Various clipping fixes applied to Rush maps

Crosshair System Gets Its Biggest Refresh Since Launch

Valve's Wednesday update centers almost entirely on the crosshair — the one UI element every player stares at for thousands of hours. The headline addition is a new "Static Quadrant" style, joining the existing classic, classic dynamic, and legacy options. Unlike dynamic styles that expand with movement and firing, Static Quadrant holds its shape regardless of player action, giving players a fixed reference point that doesn't bloom.

Outline color is now a separate slider, letting you pick a contrast color independent of the main crosshair hue. For classic dynamic users, two long-requested changes arrive: negative gap values are now permitted (pulling the four lines inward past center), and alpha adjustments move in 0.01 increments instead of the previous coarser steps. That means 100 distinct opacity levels instead of roughly 20.

Weapon inaccuracy and spread visualization has also been corrected. The crosshair now more accurately reflects the actual cone of fire for each weapon state, closing a long-standing gap between what the UI showed and where bullets actually went.

Grenade Crosshairs in Freeze Time Enable Insta-Smoke Lineups

The most immediately practical change for competitive play: grenade crosshairs now appear during freeze time. Hold any grenade attack button — left click for standard throw, right click for short toss, or both for medium — and the trajectory preview renders instantly. This lets teams coordinate instant smoke lineups before the round timer starts, removing the guesswork from early-round executes on maps like Mirage, Inferno, and Anubis.

The feature works with all grenade types: smokes, flashes, HE, and incendiaries. For coaches and IGLs, it means freeze time can now be used to verify lineup angles rather than just buying and positioning.

Share Code Format Changed — Old Codes Won't Work

Crosshair share codes have been restructured to accommodate the new settings. Scope dot scale and color preferences are now baked into the code string, and the encoding format itself has changed. Any code generated before this update will fail to import. Players sharing crosshairs on community sites, Discord, or social media will need to regenerate and redistribute them.

The change is backward-incompatible by design; Valve opted for a clean break rather than a legacy parser. Expect a brief period of broken links across crosshair-sharing communities.

Rush Maps Receive Clipping Fixes

Outside the crosshair overhaul, the patch notes list "various clipping fixes in Rush maps" under a generic MISC header. No specific maps or locations were named. Rush — the fast-paced, single-site mode introduced in the 2024 Major cycle — has had persistent geometry issues where players could peek through unintended gaps or get stuck on invisible collision. The fixes likely target those outliers, but without a detailed changelog, the exact spots remain unknown.

What's Still Unclear

Valve didn't specify whether the clipping fixes apply to all Rush maps or a subset, nor whether the crosshair changes affect viewmodel alignment or recoil patterns. The inaccuracy visualization fix suggests the underlying spread math was touched, but no weapon behavior changes were announced. Competitive players should test their main weapons in a private server before match play.

The update is live now on all regions. No client restart is required if you're already in the main menu; the changes apply on next map load.
