THE SHORT ANSWER
The October 14 CS2 update adds a download progress bar and click-and-drag camera controls to the demo viewer, requires a new server flag for round backup files, fixes AUG reload animations, makes radio commands explicit, adds a skybox occluder tool for mappers, and improves Vulkan stability.
- Demo viewer gains progress bar, click-and-drag camera, and free/chase camera during pause
- Round backup files now require '-allow_round_backup_files' server startup flag
- AUG standing and crouch reload animations updated to match actual reload duration
- Radio commands now use an explicit allowed list
- Vulkan renderer receives stability improvements
Demo and Replay Viewer Overhaul
The most visible changes land in the demo viewer. A progress bar now shows download status when fetching replays, removing the guesswork that previously left players staring at a blank screen. Camera controls have switched to a click-and-drag scheme, aligning the viewer with standard 3D navigation patterns. Free and chase cameras remain functional while a demo is paused, letting analysts frame shots without fighting playback. A handful of seeking bugs — jumping to a specific tick and finding the camera in a broken state — have also been addressed.
Server-Side Changes: Round Backup Files
Server operators will need to update launch scripts. Round backup files, which allow a match to be restored after a crash or disconnect, are no longer enabled by default. The new startup flag "-allow_round_backup_files" must be present for the feature to activate. Valve did not explain the reasoning in the patch notes, but the move suggests a desire to reduce disk I/O on servers that don't use the functionality, or to prevent accidental backup generation in environments where storage is constrained.
AUG Reload Animations Adjusted
The AUG receives targeted animation work. Both standing and crouching reload sequences have been retimed to match the weapon's actual reload duration. Prior to this patch, the visual animation could finish before or after the weapon was mechanically ready to fire, creating a desync between what the player saw and what the game registered. The fix should eliminate the guesswork for AUG users who time their peeks around reload completion.
Radio Commands and Workshop Tools
Radio commands now operate from an explicit allowed list. The change tightens control over which voice lines can be triggered, likely aimed at preventing spam or unintended command usage in competitive modes. For map creators, a new tool material — "toolsskybox_occluder" — has been added to the CS2 Workshop Tools. It gives mappers a dedicated way to mark geometry that should block skybox rendering, improving optimization workflows.
Vulkan Renderer Stability
The patch closes with a broad line: stability improvements for the Vulkan renderer. No specific crashes or scenarios were listed, but Vulkan has been the default graphics API on Linux and an option on Windows since launch. Incremental fixes in this area typically address driver-specific hangs, memory leaks, or synchronization issues that surface across the wide GPU install base.
The update is live on all platforms. No client restart is required beyond the normal Steam download.
