THE SHORT ANSWER
Roblox has released In-Experience Creation (IEC) for Makeup, enabling developers to build games where players create custom eye makeup, lip makeup, face makeup, eyelashes, and eyebrows in real time on their avatars. Creators earn 70% of sales after recouping a creation advance. The feature requires a Premium subscription, Avatar Creation Tokens, and implementation of new APIs including PromptCreateMakeupAsync for multi-layer compositing. Creations save to player inventory for use across R15 avatars but cannot be sold or traded. A demo place is available for testing.
- Players can create and purchase custom makeup (eye, lip, face, eyelashes, eyebrows) inside experiences with real-time preview on their avatar
- Creators receive 70% revenue share (30% item creator + 40% game creator) after recouping creation advance
- Requires Roblox Plus or Premium 1000/2200 subscription and purchase of Avatar Creation Tokens per makeup type
- New APIs: PromptCreateAvatarAssetAsync for single assets, PromptCreateMakeupAsync for multi-layer compositing
- Assets must pass UGC moderation; failed moderation means no refund (appeals possible), and creations are personal-use only
- Only works on R15 avatars; emissive effects not yet supported
Real-time makeup authoring arrives in Roblox experiences
Roblox has shipped In-Experience Creation (IEC) for Makeup, a new system that lets developers build games where players design, buy, and save custom cosmetics directly on their avatars. The feature covers eye makeup, lip makeup, face makeup, eyelashes, and eyebrows. Players see changes instantly — like applying makeup in front of a mirror — which eliminates the guesswork of how an asset will fit a particular head shape.
What players get
Inside an IEC-enabled experience, users paint with soft brushes for blush and eyeshadow, a glitter brush, and metallic effects. They can stack multiple layers and composite them horizontally into a single look. When satisfied, they purchase the creation and it lands in their inventory as a portable asset usable across any R15 head they own. The workflow mirrors existing UGC makeup behavior, but the authoring happens live in the game rather than in Studio.
Creator requirements and setup
Game owners must hold a Roblox Plus or Roblox Premium subscription (Premium 1000 or 2200 tier), matching the UGC marketplace prerequisite. They then purchase Avatar Creation Tokens from the Creator Dashboard for each makeup category they want to enable: FaceMakeup, LipMakeup, EyeMakeup, EyebrowAccessory, or EyelashAccessory. Tokens can be bought as a bundle under a "Makeup" grouping.
Technical implementation
Developers need to wire up several new APIs:
- Call
WrapTextureTransfer:PrepareProjectionMeshDataAsync()to cache projection data on heads. - Use
WrapTarget:CreateTextureInTargetSpaceAsync()andCreateTextureInCageSpaceAsync()when converting between cage and target UV spaces. - Compile painted
EditableImagetextures into uploadable IEC assets viaAssetService:CreateDecalAsync(), parenting the correspondingWrapTextureTransferto the decal. - For single-asset creation, invoke
AvatarCreationService:PromptCreateAvatarAssetAsync(). - For multi-layer makeup outfits, use the new
PromptCreateMakeupAsync()API. - Listen for
AvatarAssetModerationCompleted(andAvatarOutfitModerationCompletedfor multi-asset creations) to know when moderation clears and the asset is safe to equip in-experience.
Monetization and guardrails
Roblox takes a 30% platform fee. Of the remaining 70%, the item creator receives 30% and the game creator receives 40% — but only after the creation advance is recouped. All generated assets must pass standard UGC validation and moderation. Creations are locked to personal use: they cannot be listed on the Marketplace, traded, or resold. If an asset fails moderation, the purchase is not refunded, though users can appeal. Emissive effects are not supported in IEC at launch.
Where to test
An uncopylocked demo place, Roblox Avatar Creator, is live for immediate experimentation. It includes makeup alongside hats, shirts, and a full avatar so developers can see how the pieces mix and match. The placefile is also downloadable from GitHub for offline inspection.
Limits to know
- Only R15 avatars support in-experience makeup creation.
- No emissive support yet; the team says work is underway.
- Moderation failures are final unless overturned on appeal — no automatic refunds.
