Roblox Launches In-Game Editable Image Publishing to Player Inventory

Creators can now let players publish EditableImages directly from experiences into their personal inventory for cross-game use.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Roblox has released AssetService:PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync, replacing the older PromptCreateAssetAsync method. The new API accepts an Object parameter and supports publishing EditableImages straight to a player's inventory, where they become usable across other Roblox experiences or off-platform. Games must be published and have "Allow Mesh / Image APIs" enabled.

  • PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync replaces PromptCreateAssetAsync with an Object parameter
  • EditableImage publishing is live and sends assets directly to player inventory
  • Published images work across Roblox experiences and off-platform
  • Requires published place and "Allow Mesh / Image APIs" game setting
  • Official code samples demonstrate logo generation and interactive drawing

API Method Renamed and Expanded

Roblox has renamed the in-game asset creation method from AssetService:PromptCreateAssetAsync(Instance) to AssetService:PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync(Object). The change establishes a consistent pattern for future creation and publishing prompts. The new method accepts a generic Object rather than an Instance, broadening the types of content that can be published through the same flow.

EditableImage Publishing Goes Live

As of the announcement date, uploading an EditableImage through PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync is fully released. When a player completes the prompt, the resulting image lands in their personal inventory. From there it can be used in other Roblox experiences or exported off-platform, giving creators a direct path from in-game drawing tools to portable assets.

Requirements for Testing

Two conditions must be met before the prompt works:

  • The place must be published; the call fails in unpublished Studio sessions.
  • The game setting "Allow Mesh / Image APIs" must be enabled.

Without both, PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync will error.

Official Code Samples

Roblox provided two reference implementations.

Server-Side Logo Generator

A ServerScript draws the Roblox logo into an EditableImage using a buffer, then calls the prompt for the joining player. The snippet demonstrates CreateEditableImage, WritePixelsBuffer, and the new publish call with Enum.AssetType.Image.

Interactive Drawing App

A more involved example sets up a RemoteEvent named PublishDrawing in ReplicatedStorage. A LocalScript in StarterPlayerScripts builds a pixel-art canvas with brush size, color palette, and touch/mouse input. On publish, the client serializes the EditableImage to a buffer and fires the server, which then invokes PromptCreatePlatformContentAsync on the player's behalf.

What This Enables

Creators can now build in-game photo modes, character customizers, level editors with texture export, or collaborative drawing games where every participant walks away with a personal copy of the artwork. Because the asset lives in the player's inventory, it persists across sessions and experiences without additional backend work.

Outstanding Questions

The announcement does not specify rate limits, moderation pipelines for published images, or whether the same flow will later support EditableMesh or other asset types. Roblox's documentation notes that any object with a Content property referencing an EditableImage can be published this way, hinting at future expansion beyond raw images.
