Roblox Opens Avatar Background Creation to All Eligible Marketplace Creators

Starting November 5, any creator with ID verification and Roblox Plus can upload and sell 2560×1440 background images for 200 Robux each, with a one-per-day upload limit at launch.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Roblox has fully released Avatar Backgrounds on Marketplace. Eligible creators (ID verified + Roblox Plus) can upload 2560×1440 JPG/PNG/TGA/BMP files for a 200 Robux fee, sell at a 200 Robux price floor, and publish up to one background per day. Backgrounds render on a 3D cyclorama in-experience and as flat images on web profiles. Limited publishing is supported.

  • Full release effective November 5, 2026; pilot program creators already have backgrounds live
  • Requires both ID verification and active Roblox Plus subscription to upload and publish
  • Upload fee 200 Robux, price floor 200 Robux, launch limit of one background per day per creator
  • File must be 2560×1440, flattened RGB, no alpha channel, sRGB color space
  • Backgrounds project onto a 3D cyclorama in-experience; web profiles show flat 2D rendering for now

Roblox has moved Avatar Backgrounds out of pilot and into full release. As of November 5, every creator who meets the eligibility requirements can upload and sell their own background images on the Marketplace, giving avatars a custom environment instead of the default void.

Eligibility and Costs

Only creators with both ID verification and an active Roblox Plus subscription can upload and publish backgrounds. Group uploads are supported, so studios can publish under a shared identity. Each upload carries a 200 Robux fee, and the minimum sale price is also 200 Robux. At launch, creators are limited to one background upload per day, a cap Roblox says it will revisit once review throughput stabilizes. There is no limit on how many approved backgrounds a creator can publish.

Technical Specifications

Source files must be exactly 2560 × 1440 pixels, exported as flattened RGB with no alpha channel. Accepted formats are JPG, PNG, TGA, and BMP in sRGB color space. The upload pipeline runs automated validation on resolution, alpha presence, and format; failures must be fixed before the metadata step. Roblox applies an automatic edge fade, so creators should not bake their own vignette or transparency into the source image.

How Backgrounds Render

In 3D experiences, the image is projected onto a cyclorama — a curved plane that bends from wall to floor like a photo-studio backdrop. The avatar stands in front of this surface, and the camera can move around it. On web profile pages, the same file renders as a flat 2D image behind the avatar thumbnail because no 3D scene exists there yet. Roblox expects web rendering to converge toward the 3D treatment over time, so the guidance is to author for the cyclorama.

Template Zones and Composition

The 2560 × 1440 canvas is divided into four zones:

  • Transparent Area (outer edges): alpha-faded into UI chrome.
  • Safe Area (center band): visible at every camera angle, untouched by curvature.
  • Distortion Area (lower stretch): heavily foreshortened; best used for ground textures or gradients.
  • Avatar Location (lower center): where the character stands.

Best practice: push tall elements like buildings or trees into the far background, keep the floor readable, and avoid letting vertical objects cross the floor-to-wall seam.

Publishing Options and Review

After the upload fee is paid, each background enters human review before it can be published from the Creations dashboard. All standard Marketplace publishing options are available, including Limited runs. Roblox says the daily upload limit exists to keep review queues manageable while the system scales.

The first wave of backgrounds from pilot participants is already searchable on Marketplace. Creators with questions are directed to the announcement thread on the Developer Forum.
