THE SHORT ANSWER
Roblox Studio now offers a Quality mode for AI texture generation that outputs 4K PBR textures (color, roughness, metalness) in roughly two minutes, complementing the existing Fast mode (1K color-only, ~30 seconds). Accessible via Model > Texture, right-click Generate > Texture, or Assistant's /generate_texture command. Best practice: iterate prompts in Fast, then re-run in Quality. Upcoming features include normal map support, UV preservation, and easier Fast-to-Quality re-prompting.
- Quality mode generates 4K PBR textures with color, roughness, and metalness maps; Fast mode remains 1K color-only
- Generation time: ~2 minutes for Quality vs ~30 seconds for Fast
- Accessible through Model ribbon, right-click context menu, or Assistant command
- Works on multi-part meshes including hidden/animated parts
- Roadmap includes normal map support, UV preservation, preview persistence, and streamlined re-prompting
Roblox has rolled out a beta Quality mode for its AI-powered texture generation tool in Studio, giving creators a path to 4K physically based rendering (PBR) maps that include roughness and metalness alongside base color. The feature sits alongside the existing Fast mode and is available now to all Studio users.
Two Modes: Fast vs Quality
The texture generator now offers a choice at generation time:
- Fast — produces a 1K color-only texture in roughly 30 seconds.
- Quality — produces a 4K PBR set (color, roughness, metalness) in about two minutes.
Both modes work on models with multiple parts, so hidden or animated geometry gets textured consistently. The announcement notes Quality mode performs better on higher-resolution source meshes.
How to Access It
Creators can trigger generation three ways:
- Model ribbon → Texture button with a model selected
- Right-click an object → Generate → Texture
- Assistant command
/generate_texturewith the mesh selected
A dropdown in the generation dialog lets you pick Fast or Quality before submitting the prompt.
Prompting Guidance and Current Limits
Roblox recommends iterating prompts in Fast mode first, then re-running the same prompt in Quality once the direction looks right. Details often shift between modes, so prompt tweaks may be needed.
Effective prompts describe materials, colors, and wear explicitly — for example, "bright red hull, natural wood edging, faded white paint on the interior." The system cannot handle requests that require geometry changes, lighting setups, particle effects, or transparency (glass). Alpha channels are not supported yet.
The generator also ignores Assistant chat history and any other scene context; everything must be in the prompt itself.
What's Coming Next
Over the coming weeks Roblox plans to add:
- One-click re-prompting from Fast to Quality with the same inputs
- Option to preserve an object's original UV layout
- Persistent image previews so you can re-prompt either mode from the last result
- Support for normal maps (currently ignored)
Community Reaction
Early forum feedback highlights two main asks: normal map output in Quality mode ("what really sells depth on wood and stone") and selectable output resolution to manage memory on lower-end devices. Several developers also requested Quality mode for the separate Material Generator so props and floors can match. A separate thread asked about the status of AI moderation preview tooling, citing concerns over false-positive bans.
The beta is live now; Roblox says it will update the announcement thread as each roadmap item ships.
