Rust September Update Overhauls Gun Audio, Adds Team Bag Labels, Previews Naval Expansion

Facepunch's latest maintenance patch reworks how far weapon sounds travel, adds team bag identification, enables volumetric clouds by default, and outlines a roadmap culminating in November's Naval update and December's 12-year anniversary.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Rust's September 4 maintenance update introduces weapon-specific sound ranges (400-600m), team bag labels visible with building privilege, minicopter damage indicators, volumetric clouds on by default, and numerous bug fixes, while teasing October balance changes, November's Naval update with modular boats, and a Warhammer crossover DLC.

  • Gun sounds now travel 400-600m based on weapon class, breaking previous 350m grid limit
  • Team bags show owner names when viewed with hammer and building privilege
  • Minicopters gain visual/audio damage states at 45% and 20% health
  • Volumetric clouds enabled by default, replacing 2D clouds long-term
  • Roadmap: October meta changes, November Naval update, December 12-year anniversary, Warhammer DLC

Facepunch released Rust's September maintenance update on Thursday, a patch focused on long-standing bugs and quality-of-life improvements rather than new content. The studio also laid out its roadmap through the end of the year: October balance changes, a November Naval update adding modular boats and ocean monuments, December's 12-year anniversary, and a Warhammer 40,000 crossover DLC still to be detailed.

Gun Sound Overhaul Changes Engagement Ranges

The most mechanically significant change rewrites how far weapon reports travel. Previously, all gunshots were capped at roughly 350 meters — the size of a single network grid. Because players only receive audio from grids they're registered to, the world felt smaller than it is, and servers that adjusted grid size for performance inadvertently made the problem worse.

The new system decouples sound range from network grids. Each weapon class now has its own maximum:

  • Pistols, SAR, SKS, SMGs, shotguns: 400 meters
  • AK, LR-300: 500 meters
  • LMGs, Minigun, Bolt Action Rifle, L96: 600 meters

The extra 50 meters on the low end matters because sound now bleeds into adjacent grids. Players will hear more distant firefights, but firing louder weapons also broadcasts your position farther. The shift creates a new trade-off: high-damage rifles gain reach at the cost of stealth.

Quality-of-Life Fixes: Bags, Minicopters, Visuals

Team bag identification finally arrives. With building privilege active and a hammer equipped, looking at a sleeping bag now displays which team member owns it. The fix addresses years of frustration where even properly named bags were hard to distinguish in clustered bases.

Minicopters receive damage indicators matching the attack and transport helicopters. Visual and audio cues trigger at 45% and 20% health remaining — smoke, fire, and engine sounds that let pursuers judge whether to chase a fleeing mini or let it limp away.

Foliage displacement has been smoothed. Grass and bushes now react more naturally to moving players and objects, and transitions when entities are removed no longer pop abruptly.

Several persistent bugs were squashed: player eyes no longer get stuck closed, respawning sleepers become visible immediately, RF C4 stacks correctly, and tugboat rugs stop deleting themselves.

Volumetric Clouds Enabled by Default

Volumetric clouds, introduced last patch as an experimental option, are now on by default. The setting moved from experimental to the standard graphics tab, with quality tied to preset levels. The console variable graphics.vclouds has been replaced by graphics.volumetric_clouds. Facepunch intends to fully retire the old 2D cloud system.

Workshop creators using the in-client skin tool also get automated screenshots included with submissions, cutting a manual step from the pipeline.

Roadmap: Naval Update Headlines November

Facepunch confirmed the November Naval update will add modular boats with cannons, customization options, new ocean monuments, and smaller islands beyond the current map edge. October brings meta and balance adjustments — the studio is actively soliciting feedback on Discord and social channels. December marks twelve years since Rust's initial release, with anniversary events planned alongside the Warhammer crossover announcement.

The maintenance patch is live on all branches. Server owners should note the new graphics.volumetric_clouds convar if they manage client settings via startup scripts.
