THE SHORT ANSWER
Rust's October 2 Meta Shift update adds blueprint fragments required for Workbench tiers 2 and 3, redistributes loot across monuments, improves hackable/elite crate rewards, and gives drones a single storage slot.
- Workbench Level 2 now needs 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments; Level 3 needs 5 Advanced Fragments
- Basic fragments drop from green/blue puzzle rooms, airdrops, military crates, and roadside metal detecting
- Advanced fragments come from hackable crates, elite crates (10% chance), and major monuments like Oil Rig and Launch Site
- Nearly every monument has had its loot crate locations moved to break established run paths
- Drones gain one stack-sized storage slot; thrown explosives arm on drop and player drones are targeted by SAMs/turrets
Blueprint Fragments Gate Workbench Progression
The headline change is a new fragment system that sits on top of the existing scrap-based tech tree. Workbench Level 1 is untouched, but Level 2 now requires five Basic Blueprint Fragments and Level 3 requires five Advanced Blueprint Fragments. Scrap costs for those two tiers have been "greatly reduced" so players have surplus scrap for tech-tree unlocks.
Basic fragments are guaranteed in green puzzle rooms (one each) and in blue-card puzzles next to the red keycard (two each). They also appear in airdrops, military crates, large underwater crates, junkpile scientists, and as a chance drop from roadside metal detecting. Chaining a green and blue puzzle in a single monument run yields three fragments immediately.
Advanced fragments are guaranteed inside hackable crates and have a 1-in-10 chance in elite crates, always spawning in pairs. The primary sources are Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Nuclear Missile Silo, Underwater Labs, both Oil Rigs, and the Cargo Ship and Chinook crate events. Players can also convert 20 Basic fragments into one Advanced fragment as a fallback.
Facepunch frames this as "experimental step 1" to slow clan snowballing and force early monument contention. Larger groups will eventually accumulate excess fragments, creating a trade economy, while solos and small groups will have to contest monuments more aggressively. A second part is planned for the December update.
Monument Puzzle Expansion and Loot Shuffle
Three mid-tier monuments—Dome, Ferry Terminal, and Radtown—have received green keycard puzzle rooms for the first time. The Dome puzzle room also now contains a recycler, giving players a reason to stop there beyond the puzzle itself.
Separately, the studio has moved the majority of loot crates at "almost every monument" to new locations. Areas that previously saw little traffic have been refreshed, and established loot-run paths are effectively reset. The goal is to break five-year-old muscle memory and make loot runs feel unfamiliar again.
Crate Loot Rework
Hackable and elite crates have had their loot tables cleaned up. Facepunch acknowledges the steady stream of "awful loot roll" screenshots on social media and says hackable crates "should always feel rewarding" now, with multiple useful items per crate rather than filler junk.
Drone Storage and Combat Changes
Every drone now has a single storage slot that holds one stack of any item. While piloting, left-click drops the stack. Throwable explosives dropped this way arm and behave normally, so pilots need to mind their own blast radius. SAM sites and auto turrets now treat player-controlled drones as hostile and will engage them; marketplace drones remain safe.
Nuclear Missile Silo Notes
The announcement text cuts off mid-sentence on the Nuclear Missile Silo, but the monument (added May 2023 as a blue-card site) is listed as a guaranteed source of Advanced Blueprint Fragments via its hackable crates. Its forced corridors and heavy scientist presence already made it a high-risk, high-reward location; the fragment requirement adds another reason for groups to push inside.
What's Still Unclear
The full patch notes for balance changes, performance gains, and the custom crosshair mentioned in peripheral coverage have not been published in the primary devblog text. Facepunch says it will adjust fragment drop rates and distribution over the coming weeks based on feedback. The December update will deliver "part 2" of the progression experiment.
