THE SHORT ANSWER
The May 7, 2026 Rust update introduces a workbench upgrade system with nine rare modules that grant bonuses and change visuals, a mortar deployable for indirect fire requiring binocular spotting, tin can alarms that can now hold grenades and other throwables, a vending machine UI overhaul, a new Crypt stone building skin, and an in-Discord shop offering 20% off pre-2026 DLC through May 21. Quality-of-life fixes include power requirements for computer stations, grenade animation consistency, and monument build-zone corrections.

Facepunch shipped Rust's May 2026 update on Thursday, bringing a wipe and a slate of changes that touch crafting, raiding, base defense, and the storefront. The headline additions are a workbench upgrade system with nine rare modules, a mortar deployable for indirect artillery, and an experimental Discord shop running a two-week sale on older DLC.
Workbench Upgrades
Workbenches now accept up to nine upgrade modules that are not craftable and drop rarely. Each module provides a distinct bonus effect and alters the bench's visual model. Players can mix and match upgrades to tailor benches for specific playstyles — faster crafting, reduced resource costs, or specialty bonuses — and a fully upgraded bench shows all nine visual changes. Because upgrades are not craftable, losing a bench means losing its modules, adding risk to forward bases and raid targets.
Mortar Deployable
The mortar is a new placeable artillery piece that sits on flat terrain and lobs shells over long distances. It functions similarly to the existing cannon but lacks a visual aiming guide. Players must use binoculars to estimate elevation and range, then adjust through trial and error. Each shot applies recoil that nudges the mortar upward and a small random dispersion, preventing precise repeat fire. Two shell types are available: an anti-personnel round for player damage and a high-explosive round tuned for structure demolition. The mortar creates a new siege dynamic for clan raids and monument control.
Tin Can Alarm Traps
The tin can alarm retains its tripwire trigger and loud clatter but now accepts a payload. When tripped, the loaded item is thrown in place. Supported payloads: F1 grenade, molotov, bee grenade, beancan grenade, flashbang, smoke grenade, supply signal, flare, and firecrackers. This turns a simple early-warning device into a lethal or disruptive trap, usable inside monuments or around base perimeters.
Vending Machine UI and Store Changes
The vending machine administration page has been rebuilt. Sellers can now stock orders from a built-in inventory view, list individual skins instead of bulk stacks, and reorder existing sell orders by dragging rather than deleting and recreating. On the cosmetic side, the Crypt stone building skin joins the permanent store, applying a weathered, crypt-themed texture to stone-tier building pieces.
Discord Shop and Limited Sale
Starting May 7, Rust's official Discord server hosts an integrated shop — only the second game to use Discord's storefront. Every piece of Steam Item Store DLC released before 2026 is discounted 20% through May 21. Facepunch calls this experimental; future sales will only include older items, never new releases. Purchases link directly to the buyer's Steam inventory.
Quality-of-Life Fixes
Computer stations now require electrical power, pushing players to maintain generators or solar arrays for map access. Third-person grenade throw animations have been corrected for consistency. The Floating City boat vendor now stocks modular boat parts and a cheaper DPV, reducing the penalty for losing a vessel. Monuments with multiple no-build zones now display each zone correctly, and road signs spawn properly at Outpost, Junkyard, and Water Wells.
