THE SHORT ANSWER
The May 7, 2026 Rust update introduces a workbench upgrade system with nine non-craftable modifiers, a mortar deployable for indirect fire raids, tin can alarms that can now hold grenades and other throwables, a redesigned vending machine interface, a new Crypt stone building skin, and an official Discord shop offering 20% off pre-2026 DLC through May 21. Quality-of-life fixes include power requirements for computer stations, grenade animation consistency, and monument building radius corrections.
- Nine workbench upgrades provide unique bonuses and visual changes; they are found, not crafted
- Mortar deployable fires anti-personnel or anti-structure shells at long range using binoculars for ranging
- Tin can alarms now accept nine throwable types including F1 grenades, molotovs, and flashbangs
- Vending machine admin UI redesigned with inventory-based order setup and skin selling
- Discord shop launches with 20% off all pre-2026 Steam DLC until May 21
Facepunch shipped the May 2026 wipe for Rust on May 7 under the banner "Upgrade hard, raid harder." The patch touches crafting progression, raid tooling, base defense, trading UI, and monetization — all arriving alongside the monthly map reset that wipes player progress on official servers.
Workbench Upgrade System
Workbenches now accept up to nine distinct upgrades that players find in the world; none are craftable. Each upgrade grants a unique bonus — faster crafting, reduced scrap cost, extra output slots, and similar effects — and visibly alters the bench model. Mixing and matching is encouraged, and a fully upgraded bench shows all nine visual modifications. Because upgrades are rare drops, losing a bench to a raid now carries more weight than just the tech tier it represented.
Mortar Deployable
The mortar is a new ground-placed artillery piece functionally similar to the existing cannon but built for indirect fire over long distances. There is no aiming reticle or trajectory preview. Players must use binoculars to estimate elevation, then adjust through trial and error. Each shot kicks the mortar upward slightly and adds a small random distance variance, preventing perfect repeatability. Two shell types exist: one optimized for player damage, the other for structure demolition. The device fills a niche between close-range raid tools and helicopter or Bradley engagements.
Tin Can Alarm Traps
The tin can alarm retains its tripwire trigger and loud clatter but now ejects a loaded item when tripped. Supported payloads include F1 grenade, molotov, bee grenade, beancan grenade, flashbang, smoke grenade, supply signal, flare, and firecrackers. This turns a pure early-warning device into a damage or utility trap usable at base entrances, monument chokepoints, or inside tunnels. The alarm can be placed anywhere, including inside monument no-build zones.
Vending Machine UI Overhaul
The vending machine administration screen has been rebuilt. Sellers can now populate sell orders directly from an integrated inventory view, list individual skins rather than full stacks, and reorder existing offers without deleting and recreating them. The purchase page received a visual refresh but no functional changes. The update targets high-volume shop keepers at Outpost and Bandit Camp who previously managed large inventories through repetitive clicks.
Discord Shop and Crypt Skin
Facepunch launched an official Rust storefront inside Discord, the second game to use the platform's native shop feature. From May 7 through May 21, every Steam Item Store DLC released before 2026 is discounted 20 percent. The sale is described as experimental with no plans for regular cadence; future promotions would only cover older items. Purchases deliver directly to the buyer's Steam inventory. Separately, the Crypt stone building skin entered the permanent store, offering a weathered, tombstone-textured reskin for stone-tier building pieces.
Quality-of-Life Fixes
Computer stations now require electrical power to operate, pushing players to maintain generator networks for map intel. Third-person grenade throw animations were corrected for consistency. The Floating City boat vendor added modular boat parts and a cheaper DPV to the stock list. Monuments with multiple no-build zones now display each zone boundary correctly. Road signs now spawn properly at Outpost, Junkyard, and Water Wells monuments. A batch of smaller bug fixes rounds out the patch notes.
