Rust's Shipshape Update Overhauls Boats, Deep Sea, and Daylight Cycle

Facepunch's March update extends daylight by 20 minutes, reworks boat building and combat, adds electricity to vessels, and changes how the Deep Sea event works.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The Shipshape update adds 20 minutes of daylight, removes the 5-minute edit timer on boat blocks, fixes sail destruction bugs, adds cannon movement penalties, enables electricity and industrial items on boats, makes wrecks destructible, adjusts decay timers, and rebalances the Deep Sea event with slower loot respawns and random spawn sides.

  • Daylight extended by ~20 minutes; night remains ~10 minutes
  • Boat blocks can now be rotated and demolished anytime in edit mode
  • Cannon hits apply movement penalty up to 70% speed reduction
  • Electricity, water IO, and most industrial items now work on boats
  • Deep Sea loot respawns slowly, initial fill cut to 70%, spawn side randomized
  • Boat decay delay doubled to 24 hours; decay duration cut to 12 hours

Daylight Extended by 20 Minutes

Facepunch has lengthened the daytime cycle by roughly 20 minutes while keeping night at its usual 10-minute duration. The change aims to give players more time for daylight gathering, building, and combat without removing nighttime as a tactical window. The adjustment applies globally across all maps and server types.

Boat Building Quality-of-Life Fixes

Several long-standing boat frustrations have been addressed. Building blocks placed on player vessels can now be rotated and demolished at any time while in edit mode — the standard five-minute placement timer no longer applies. The tiny dive-site buoys that previously brought full-size boats to a dead stop have been removed from collision logic, letting ships sail freely past them. A bug that destroyed sails when they were rotated after initial placement has also been fixed; the issue stemmed from sails being positioned slightly off the boat edge, which triggered ground-watch destruction when nearby items were picked up. Finally, the Deploy & Edit steering wheel option now always appears, showing an error toast with a reason if the current location prevents editing instead of simply hiding the button.

Cannon Combat Gets a Movement Penalty

Player-built boats struck by cannon fire now suffer a stacking movement-speed penalty. Repeated hits can reduce a vessel's speed to 30% of its maximum, a change intended to encourage boarding actions and make naval engagements more decisive. To offset the increased vulnerability of gunners, player protection while mounted on cannons has been buffed.

Electricity, Industrial, and Water IO on Vessels

Almost the full suite of electrical, industrial, and water input/output items can now be placed on boats. Exceptions — blocked for performance or balance reasons — include auto turrets, SAM sites, windmills, CCTV cameras, seismic sensors, hanging lights, door controllers, and hoppers. Facepunch notes the blocked list is subject to future revision. Wallpaper can also be applied to boat surfaces the same way it works on land bases.

Destructible Wrecks and Adjusted Decay

Sunken player-built boats are now destructible block by block, allowing survivors to explore wrecks and recover loot. Decay timers have been reworked based on community feedback: the decay delay (time before decay starts) has doubled from 12 to 24 hours, while the decay duration (time to fully destroy) has been cut from 18 to 12 hours. The result is that active players can stay offline longer without losing their boat, but abandoned hulls disappear faster. A reminder: a boat only counts as "used" when it receives steering-wheel input.

Deep Sea Event Rebalanced

The Deep Sea monument has seen a suite of configuration changes. Loot now respawns slowly over time rather than all at once, and the initial fill when the event opens has been reduced to roughly 70% of its previous volume. The map side where the Deep Sea appears is now randomized each opening, and the event no longer triggers immediately after a server wipe. RHIBs can no longer enter the zone. A notification sound plays when the Deep Sea becomes accessible. All new parameters are exposed as convars for server owners. Network range in the Deep Sea has been increased from 300 to 620 metres, letting players spot ships at much greater distances — a luxury the mainland cannot afford due to entity density.

Storage Box Pack DLC

Shipping alongside the update is the Storage Box Pack, a set of 16 unique skins for the Large Wood Box covering categories such as Ammo, Armor, Charcoal, Clothing, Components, Explosives, Food, Guns, Meds, Metal, Ore, Scrap, Stone, Sulfur, Tools, and Wood. The skins are available from the in-game store.
